Burmese Days

Did this intense look at colonial Burma set the scene for Orwell’s incredible literary career?

George Orwell pulls no punches in his debut novel based on his time working as a police officer in the Indian Imperial Police. First published in 1934, this novel has a timeless quality but its honest portrayal of the British perspective on other races makes for incredibly uncomfortable reading. In Burmese Days Orwell created something that was an epic starting point for a career using words to fight social injustice.

If possible, buy a copy of Burmese Days in an independent book shop because they need your support.
