When the brave lay down

Today, tomorrow, some time soon, a great man who led a country out of apartheid will leave a world he changed.

Nelson Mandela, when he passes, will have left behind a better world than when he entered it. I hope in his finally thoughts he knows that.

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived.
It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will
determine the significance of the life we lead.” – Nelson Mandela

When the brave lay down

When fear brings hate to our door,
And it will,
It always does.
The responsibility of every
Is to stand as tall
As can be.
Fight the fear
With the knowledge
Freedom for all is right.

While the might of a fist
Can batter you down,
Hope will still create a beacon
Through rivers of blood and chaos.

Forgiveness removes fear
Forgetting only perpetuates
Agonies of history.
Where the great fell,
Protecting the vulnerable
Deciding their lives
Shall end
So tyranny may too.

You give the power of a suit
To one who cannot walk
The common street,
And hold idle talk with one
Not their own,
You set yourself to fail.

Be the future,
Empower your soul.
Make sure your words are kind.
Offer consolation to those
In need,
Protection to those
Who are weak,
And your smile will change the world.

  1. I really enjoyed this! It really made me reflect/ think. I’m useless at writing poetry, but I love reading other peoples 🙂

      1. It really did. I wish I could compose decent poems as you do, but for now I’ll stick to writing fiction! 🙂

      2. Thanks, I will! Writing fiction is my passion, but it I agree, you have to be dedicated as it’s so time consuming!
