The Rivers Running Through Us – National Poetry Day 2013

The theme for National Poetry Day 2013, is ‘Water, water everywhere’.

I live in London and absolutely adore the River Thames, but I feel I share a different daily experience of fluid movement through the city each day on my commute. I hope you enjoy and choose to discover some fantastic poets on National Poetry Day!

The Rivers Running Through Us

Slow down.

Let tidal wave

of commuters

scurry on,

like black mice

on tube platforms

chasing crisp crumbs,

and apple cores,

sucking dregs from

discarded juice boxes

around your feet,

into their own river.

Leaving your tributary

free from pollution

of haste

and unthinking

ill-courtesy

of others.
